OIT Emergency Procedures

10/18/01

As a reminder and a precaution, the following are the IT emergency procedures

User Issues
In case of angry, concerned or confused clients:
-If there is immediate danger or physical contact between anyone, contact Campus Police immediately at x4111
-If you cannot quickly calm the client or answer the necessary questions, contact your immediate supervisor then the Help Desk for resolution. If your supervisor is unavailable, have the Help Desk locate any IT manager available for assistance.

Biological or Hazardous Materials
In case any biological materials are found in any IT facility or area (including any bodily fluid or suspicious liquid or powder materials), please ask clients to move away from the area immediately and then contact Campus Police at 5222 with a report of potential hazardous material. Then contact your supervisor (if your supervisor is not immediately available, contact the Help Desk to locate any IT manager available for assistance).

Fires, floods or other disasters
If there is an immediate physical threat to the clients in an IT facility or area, due to a fire, flood, or power outage, contact Campus Police (if possible) then have all clients and personnel vacate the area. If possible without any danger, lock the door to the facility. Immediately contact the Campus Police upon vacating, followed by the Help Desk to report the evacuation. Upon reentry to the area or facility, assess any damage or loss to equipment, furnishings etc and contact the Help Desk and Campus Police to let them know that you have successfully reentered the space. When in doubt, put personal and client safety above security or IT equipment. DO NOT LOCK ANYONE IN AN IT SPACE. IF THERE IS IMMEDIATE DANGER (ie the fire is IN the lab) EVACUATE WITHOUT LOCKING THE DOOR.

These guidelines are to assist you in making decisions if there are emergency situations. The safety of personnel and clients is most important to Montclair State University. It is imperative that you keep both the Campus Police and the management of Information Technology informed of any emergency situations and actions taken.
