What is Lyris?

Lyris is a server-based listserve management
tool. Lyris can be used to automate the creation and management of
centralized distribution lists which allows a large group of individuals to
communicate effectively. Lyris has both a menu driven command system and a
web interface to make interactions with the listserve (including subscribing
and managing the list).

provide?

Lyris mailing lists can be viewed one of three
ways; via e-mail, through a web browser, or as a threaded newsgroup. This
means that any mailing list managed by Lyris is at the same time a
traditional e-mail list, a web-based forum and a threaded newsgroup depending
on which "view" is used to access the list.
Lyris sites at MSU
top
There are currently six virtual Lyris sites
available at Montclair State. Each site has its own homepage and can have
its own administrator (the person or persons who are allowed to created and
delete lists, etc). Each site acts like a separate server, even though they
are all physically located on a single machine.

This site structure allows administrative
control to be given to a representative from each group so that they
can respond faster to faculty requests than would otherwise be possible. For
example, AJ Kelton is the site administrator for the chss-lists site and has
authority to create and modify lists for CHSS faculty. The msu-lists site is
administered by Information Technology.
An example of using
Lyris
top
To access Lyris through the email interface,
send commands to the address: lyris@<site>.montclair.edu. For example, lyris@chss-lists.montclair.edu
Some of the more common Lyris
e-mail commands
are listed below.
lists - return a list of all mailing lists at this site.
subscribe <listname> - add yourself to the list called <listname>.
unsubscribe <listname> - remove your e-mail address from <listname>.
review <listname> - return a list of email addresses for <listname>
To send a message to everyone on a particular
list, address the e-mail to <listname>@<site>.montclair.edu For
example, to send e-mail to everyone on the lyris-users mailing list, address
the e-mail to: lyris-users@msu-lists.montclair.edu.
All messages e-mailed to a list will also show up on the web forum view and
the Newsgroup view automatically.
