Alpha vs Mail.Montclair
General Information
top
All current MSU students are eligible for
e-mail access. Creating an MSU NetID account will provide access to
e-mail.
E-mail can be accessed through a web browser from any computer
with an Internet connection at http://webmail.montclair.edu.
WebMail provides students with all typical e-mail services including sending
and receiving mail, exchanging attachments, organizing mail and even
managing a mailbox. For students without e-mail access,
setting up a NetID account using the online NetID Account Form at http://netid.montclair.edu
will automatically provide access to both.

you've created your NetID account, you can return to the
NetID Account Form at any time to change your password. |
| What

which is designed to retain messages and user preferences on
the server itself as opposed to an individual

| What

POP is a type of mail server
which is designed to have e-mail downloaded periodically to a

Alpha vs Mail.Montclair
top
Alpha is a computer system which allows students and
faculty to access campus resources including web hosting, e-mail and
library services. In order to provide better e-mail service, MSU has implemented
a new e-mail system which utilizes a graphical web client to access e-mail from
anywhere, without any software other than a web browser with Internet access.
The new mail system (called Mail.Montclair) replaced the e-mail
functions of Alpha. As of December 22, 2001, all Alpha e-mail services were shut down permanently. Any other Alpha services will remain in service after
December 22, 2001.
Step 1: Move all Alpha messages to
Mail.Montclair
1. In your Mail.Montclair account, click on the link for
Collect External Mail
(this link appears at the bottom of the screen on the right side)
2. A window will open with fields- complete as follows:
POP Server: alpha.montclair.edu
POP User ID: your alpha username
Password: your alpha password
3. Verify that there is a check in the box
next to “Delete messages from server”
4. Choose a folder to save to (the default is Inbox- if
you do not have any folders set up in Mail.Montclair, you can collect your
Alpha messages to your Mail.Montclair inbox and sort them later)
5. Click Collect
All mail messages in your Alpha account will be transferred
into your Mail.Montclair account and deleted from Alpha
Step 2: Setup auto-forwarding from Alpha to
Mail.Montclair
In Alpha, in VMS Mail:
1. Type in: MAIL> SET FORWARD
IN%"""username@mail.montclair.edu"""
